Mitch Cosentino

Winemaker

Mitch CosentinoMitch began making wine in his home town  of Modesto California in 1980 and has been going non-stop ever since.  Ten years later he refocused his efforts in the Napa Valley by establishing his eponymous Cosentino Winery in Yountville that he later sold.  He has overseen and worked closely in our vineyard since 1993 and produced countless critically acclaimed wines from its fruit.

Through the years Mitch has earned nearly 2000 awards and medals for his wines and his winemaking expertise.  Among these are multiple awards for "Best Wine" and "Best Cabernet" of the year in several vintages as well as the prestigious "Andre  Tchelistcheff Winemaker of the Year" award in 2003.  He was a pioneer in the development of Meritage Association and produced the first wine to be bottled with that designation.

Mitch is widely recognized in the international winemaking community for his blending skills, deep connection with the vineyard and amazing palate memory.  He artfully combines these great skills in each of the wines he crafts carrying the distinctive expression of the vineyard and varietal or mix of varietals in precise balance.

For Mitch every wine is a blend whether it be different varietals or the same varietal from the same vineyard and vinified separately through a variety of fermentation and oak regimens.  "Each component must express its own character to the finished wine as each musician and instrument contributes to the total sound of the orchestra."

Mitch has also been an active participant in the world of wine education in addition to his "hands-on" approach and Old World techniques he skillfully employs in the production of small lots of extraordinary wines.  He has taught and lectured at several colleges and universities on wine and winemaking, spoken at the first World Conference for Nebbiolo in Italy at the request of the Italian government and has judged many competitions both domestically and abroad.

Mitch was a natural choice in guiding the Secret Rows Ranch winemaking effort given his long history with the vineyard and producing many stellar award winning wines from its fruit for more than twenty years.
